Clapham Common Celebrates Seventh Consecutive Green Flag Award

Clapham Common, the largest and most cherished green space in Lambeth, has proudly retained its Green Flag for the seventh year in a row, having first received the accolade in 2018.

The Green Flag Award scheme, overseen by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, acknowledges excellently managed parks and green spaces. This award sets the standard for green space management across the UK and globally.

Since 2018, Lambeth Council, in collaboration with the Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC), has been dedicated to enhancing the Common. Efforts have focused on addressing climate and ecological challenges, improving mental and physical wellbeing, and fostering social interaction to strengthen community spirit and social cohesion.

Clapham Common now stands among 25 other green spaces in Lambeth that proudly hold this prestigious award. This achievement underscores the borough’s commitment to maintaining high-quality, accessible, and welcoming green spaces for its residents and visitors. A complete list of the UK’s Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces can be found here.

The Green Flag Award, now in its third decade, is judged annually by experienced, independent experts. Flying the Green Flag signifies that a site upholds the highest environmental standards, ensuring it is safe, welcoming, accessible to all, well-maintained, and equipped with excellent visitor facilities.

This milestone highlights the ongoing dedication and hard work of the community and local authorities in preserving Clapham Common as a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive space for all to enjoy.

Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC) works with Lambeth Council to manage Clapham Common. It is made up of three Lambeth Councillors (from Clapham Town and Clapham Common & Abbeville wards), ten elected community representatives, and one representative each from the Friends of Clapham Common, Clapham Society and Wild Clapham.
