Big changes have started this Monday, 29 April, on the Windmill Drive (Clapham Common) project, initially announced back in 2021. The Windmill Drive Healthy Route public realm works have begun, with the road and footpath temporarily closed to pedestrians and cyclists. These works are expected to last for three months, bringing a significant transformation to this well-loved area.
Reimagining Shared Spaces
This transformation isn’t just about a new look; it’s about reimagining how we use our shared spaces to enhance safety and enjoyment for everyone. Since closing to vehicular traffic in August 2020 as a COVID-19 safety measure, Windmill Drive has become a safer haven for pedestrians and cyclists. The narrow, formerly congested road had been a hotspot for conflicts among road users. Now, it’s on track to becoming a permanent pedestrian-friendly zone.
Enhancing Safety and Enjoyment
The need for change stemmed from the desire to make Windmill Drive a more enjoyable and safer space for all. With the removal of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists can use the area without the constant worry of traffic. This project aims to create a more harmonious environment where people can enjoy the beauty of Clapham Common without the disruptions and dangers posed by cars.
What to Expect
During the three-month closure, various improvements will be made to Windmill Drive. These include:
- Upgraded Footpaths: Ensuring smoother and safer surfaces for walking and cycling.
- Improved Lighting: Enhancing visibility and safety during the evenings and early mornings.
- Green Spaces: Adding more greenery to beautify the area and create a more pleasant environment.
- Seating Areas: Providing spots for people to sit, relax, and enjoy the surroundings.
Looking Ahead
Once completed, the transformed Windmill Drive will offer a safer, more pleasant experience for everyone visiting Clapham Common. This project reflects a broader commitment to making public spaces more user-friendly and enjoyable for all.
