Lambeth Council with the support of CCMAC is installing some 50 bird and bat boxes to increase population numbers across the Common.
The boxes will also offer protection from crows and rooks which eat the chicks and bat pups. Most boxes will be fixed to trees high enough to offer some security from any vandals. Each one is numbered and is mapped so that they can be monitored throughout the year.
Pictured is Dr Iain Boulton, Lambeth Council’s Environmental Compliance Officer, fixing the first box. The initiative is funded by a levy on events on the Common.
